The Board regulates Nova Scotia’s Independent Energy System Operator (IESO), an independent, non-profit organization that ensures enough power is available to meet the province’s energy needs in real time and in the future. It does this by directing the operation of the province’s transmission system, establishing and enforcing reliability standards, planning for Nova Scotia’s medium- and long-term energy needs, and securing energy resources to meet demand.
As the regulator, the Board:
- Approves the IESO's Budget and Fees: The Board reviews and approves the IESO's proposed annual expenditures, revenue requirements, and fees.
- Approves and Establishes Cost Recovery: The Board reviews and approves the IESO’s requests to recover costs relating to energy resource supply contracts from ratepayers, along with the mechanisms used to recover those costs.
- Reviews Annual Reports: The Board reviews the IESO's annual report on its affairs.
- Adjudicates Appeals: The Board issues formal judgements on appeals that dispute IESO orders and decisions made under its market rules.
